I'm not all that familiar with using DAC's on PC's though, as I've never done it. If I have the cash for everything else and 2 x 8GB DIMM's, I will get both, otherwise I will get one and add another later. Regarding the memory, it really depends on what kind of cash I have on hand when I get to start purchasing parts for this build. I do plan to have at least 2 24" monitors from the start (which I already have), and will either grow to 2 27", or 4 24" - but the quad monitors wouldn't happen until the GPU (low priority/nice to have). I will eventually add a GPU, but it won't be right away which is why I'm willing to pay $28 more for that iGPU. I looked at the E3-1231 v3, but it does NOT have an iGPU on it, whereas the 1246 v3 does.

Honestly, the Xeon E3 series can be like getting an i7 at an i5 price, but I just prefer Xeon. 24 bits holds some slight advantages over 16 but not enough to be worth it if the gear you want costs a premium just to support 24 bit over 16 bit when there's a less expensive model that does only 16 bit).Ĭlick to expand.I chose the Xeon because of the stability, and the hyperthreading. Humans I think can go up to 21KHz in a few cases. Both the D1 and ODAC can do 24/96 if that matters to you that much (24/96 is waaaay above our hearing range. It comes with a nice enclosure if you buy it at JDS Labs. The D1 is great, but the ODAC costs less. I would recommend you save some money and get an ODAC instead. Its not like he needs audio over HDMI (we don't know if he plans on using multiple monitors) and the cables cost about the same on Monoprice (they should be, I didn't check yet). Also I see no big difference in going with 1xHDMI, 1xDP, 1xDVI versus 2xHDMI and 1xDVI. The E3-12 are i5's while the 1230 and up are i7's.Īs for memory you might as well just purchase the 2x8GB pack instead of two separate 8GB sticks since its exactly double the cost ($85 vs $170). I would go with the E3-1231V3 (1230V3 is Haswell, the 1 indicates Haswell Refresh). I considered the newer Hyper 212X, but best price I could find is about $80 which is more than double the 212 Evo. Hard to beat the price/performance, and we all know it's an awesome cooler. About $90 retail, maybe I can catch it on sale in the next few weeks!ĭecided on Cooler Master's Hyper 212 Evo for my CPU Cooler. Waiting on next purchase.ĭecided on SeaSonic G Series 55W PSU.

Excellent audio quality (audiophile on a budget) tops my list for nice-to-haves. It must also support at least three monitors, and likely four once I add a GPU. Small, and quiet (not silent) is also a requirement. Aside from that, I like to overkill so this build will definitely be more than I need, but it's something I will expect to last at least three years. Thus, a very reliable, stable machine is a must. I'm an IT Systems Administrator, but am looking to make a move into a work from home role, as I work from home a bit already.

With that in mind, the primary use of this PC is business/work related. I don't do much PC gaming anymore (thanks to the PS4), but I'll eventually add a GPU to this build any might do some gaming.

Disappointingly, I'm not (likely) creative enough to do anything more than put a Mjölnir sticker on the top of my case.Īnyway, I built an i5-4670 based system in a black Node 304, but basically rebuilt that system into a Node 304 White for my girl while planning a rebuild in my Node 304 Black.
